I think everybody knows a thing or two about social media unless you’ve been living under a rock in the past decade. Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world and there are, luckily, a lot of career opportunities in this field. People who love media trends and spend almost all of their free time on social channels may be considering turning their love for social media into a career, as I did. And I have got to tell you, it’s definitely worth it!
Hold up, what exactly is social media management?
Social media management isn’t just about posting and scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter though. There’s a lot that comes with the job and not a lot of people know this, so listen up!
Social media management is the process of creating, scheduling, posting, and analysing content on social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, as well as interacting with users on those platforms, also known as engagement management. Free and paid software, as well as professional social media management services, can help you streamline your social media management.
A social media manager is a trained specialist, and they assist you in achieving your social media objectives, such as increasing your audience or generating revenue from social media. They are responsible for creating a company’s social media policy and managing its social media platforms. In addition to being a brand’s voice, social media managers monitor engagement including likes, comments, shares, DMs, etc… to measure results.
So, what skills do you need?
It’s a no-brainer that you should be social media literate. At the very least, you should be able to use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram like a pro. You must also be aware of the differences between each platform in order to get the most out of them all. On each account, you should also be able to identify and understand your target audience.
A strong sense of humour, as well as excellent communication and writing skills, are also important. Also, when crafting your message, remember to keep your brand and target audience in mind.
What are the responsibilities of a social media manager?
Social media managers’ primary responsibilities involve creating engaging posts, reviewing post insights, and interacting with customers through the company’s social media channels. Other things social media managers focus on are: auditing the existing social media strategy, doing research on the target customers, choosing which social media platforms fit the client’s brand best, creating the social media strategy, building a social media content calendar, doing engagement management, reaching out to influencers (if influencer management lies within your services), making ad campaigns and monitoring the results, profile optimization of the social channels, hashtag research + sets and growing the social reach.
As you can see, it’s not just all about scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Social media managers have to think about every aspect of the brand and the message they want to give to their followers and (potential) customers. An enormous amount of time, effort, and energy go into managing companies’ social media channels, but it’s totally worth it.
